FWQAL Week 2—Blocks #41, 48, 73

“In for a penny, in for a pound” seems apt for my current participation. I wasn’t going to start for a while, but then I needed a break last week, and found myself doing another set of three last night. These were all simple enough to finish without diving into the templates, so I have some notes to share on measurements.

#41 — Friendship Star

If I had paid attention, I would have switched the bottom two paisley blocks for better pattern matching. These aren’t part of the FQ selection I’ve been using. You may recognize them from my Bargello Quilt. They follow the general theme I’m seeing emerge in my choices, though.

Simplify the block

Instead of the individual squares and triangles, cut the following:
Star fabric: one 2.5″ square, two 2 7⁄8″ squares,
Background fabric: one 2.5″ × 10″ strip (subcut into squares), two 2 7⁄8″ squares.

Create half-square triangle units out of the larger squares:
Place two different colors right-sides together, and mark a diagonal line down the center of the top one. Sew ¼” away from each side of the line, then cut along the line.

#48 — Homeward Bound

I wasn’t thinking clearly and cut all the four-patch pieces too large, and then messed up trimming down the top right one. If you look closely, you can tell that one green is not like the others, because I used a scrap instead of recutting out of the other fabric. C’est la vie.

Simplify the block

You can strip cut these a bit easier:
Dark: one 1.5″ × 6″ strip,
Light: three 1.5″ × 6″ strips,
Med: one 2.5″ × 10″ strip (subcut into squares).

Sew one dark and light strip along the long side, and two light strips along the long side. Cut each resulting strip unit into four 1.5″ × 2.5″ units, then piece for the four-patch corners.

Complete the rest of the square according to the book’s diagram.

#74 — Rainbow Flowers

Simplify the block

The basic unit for this is a 1.5″ finished square, so all strips are multiples of that. Fabric numbered lightest (1) to darkest (4).

Cut:
1: one 2″ square,
2: one 2″ × 6″ strip (subcut into 2″ squares),
3: one 2″ × 9″ strip (subcut into a 2″ square, two 2″ × 3.5″ strips),
4: one 2″ × 12″ strip (subcut into a 2″ square, two 2″ × 5″ strips).

Sew together as indicated in the book’s diagram.

What is this all about?

A group of quilters are working their way through The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt by Laurie Aaron Hird, trying to complete two blocks a week and posting them all to the group Flickr pool.
